MAC Kids: Welcome to Honeybee Fun!

History of the Honeybee

The honeybee is a native of the Middle East and migrated to North Africa and Europe. They came to the Americas with the early colonists, traveling in beeskep baskets. Today, bees are kept in wooden hives, (like the baskets shown in the picture below) where they are tended by the beekeepers, who tend to their needs and harvest excess honey.

Pollination

Honeybees collect pollen an nectar from flowering plants. The pollen is altered slightly to make bee bread, which suppplies the young honeybees with protein, lipids, vitamins and minerals. The nectar is partially digested and condensed into honey, a long lasting and high octane food.
