MAC Kids: Welcome to Cranberry Fun!

Cranberries are native to Massachusetts. They grow on plants called vines and live in bogs. The cranberries plant blooms in mid-June with a pale pink flower that resembles the head and neck of a sand crane. Once the flowers are pollinated the fruits will grow. The cranberries are harvested from Mid-September through November and will be on your table just in time for Thanksgiving.
There are two methods for harvesting cranberries. The "dry method" involves using a walk behind machine to rake the berries off the vines. The "wet method" involves flooding the bog with up to a foot of water and using a water reel to free the berries from the vines. The berries are corralled and removed from the bog by pumps.
